Sudhir Gupta was born and raised in India, into a family that encouraged exploration, discovery and creativity. From his earliest memories he can recall being inspired by the vibrant culture of his surroundings and attracted to the sensory arts – fascinated with visual imagery, sounds, textures and unique and compelling smells and tastes. His strong foundation of natural curiosity and a desire to understand how the creative process works led him to a degree in Engineering.
Gupta’s adventuresome spirit transported him to New York, and a dynamic new universe unexpectedly opened up for him. His first employment was working at a fragrance company, and he soon became completely enamored with the industry of creating and marketing perfume. He loved every aspect, from the art of developing aromas to the design of the packaging and glistening flacons that contained the precious juices.
In 2008, infused with this new passion, Gupta ventured into entrepreneurship and opened his first retail store, Eau de Luxe, a Parisian-inspired perfumery based in suburban Westchester. He poured all of his resources and enthusiasm into creating an elegant shop filled with exquisite niche brands and it gained attention immediately, earning a Best of Westchester business award.
As a turbulent economic climate loomed ever closer, Gupta decided in 2010 to re-fashion Eau de Luxe as an e-commerce and wholesale business, eaudeluxe.com. With a goal to offer the most exclusive and legendary fragrances and absolute best skincare and cosmetics products from around the globe, eaudeluxe.com partners with the most renowned luxury brands including Chanel, Dior, Armani, Jo Malone, Tom Ford, Lubin, Robert Piguet, Guerlain, Lancome, Kiehls, By Kilian, Clinique and Arquiste.
In 2014 the business was awarded Inc Magazine’s Top 500 Fastest Growing Companies in the United States, and has consistently ranked on the list for five consecutive years, achieving Hall of Fame status in 2018. Additionally, in 2017, Crain’s Business recognized it as one of the 50 Fastest Growing Companies in New York.
Over the years as Gupta became more immersed in the olfactive world, his passion evolved to an intense appreciation of factices, the giant perfume bottle display replicas designed for retail marketing in fine department stores and designer fragrance boutiques. Taken from the French word for ‘fake’, these artistic glass masterpieces are glamorous advertisements for the iconic fragrances they represent.
The first factice Gupta purchased was L’Air du Temps by Nina Ricci, a classic bottle from post-war-era Paris featuring intertwined frosted glass doves. This was the start of what would become a true obsession, and in twenty years Gupta has amassed a collection of over 1500 factices, the largest collection of factices in the world as confirmed by his entry into the Guiness Book of World Records. Gupta identifies these factices as significant historical objects, and, through their designs, they tell stories about 20th century fashion and art, the changing nature of commerce, the growing power of women in society, and times of war and peace. Factices are rarely produced today, and when they are, they are often made with inexpensive plastics rather than the substantial etched glass formerly utilized by the artisans of Baccarat, Lalique and Guerlain. It is Gupta’s dream to preserve the vestiges of this dying art and to keep these pieces of history to be enjoyed by new generations.
To showcase his collection, Gupta has opened The New York Facticerie in the historic Silks Building, located in Long Island City, Queens. The factices are lovingly displayed as a rotating exhibition in the meticulously re-created interior of Lascoff Drugs, an Upper East Side institution that closed in 2012 after 113 years of business. Gupta purchased Lascoff’s antique lighting fixtures, apothecary jars, wood and glass cabinets, and even the brass cash register and large distinctive exterior sign that dates back to 1931. The Lascoff interior provides a strikingly unique backdrop and a historically accurate setting for the factices.
After more than two decades of being totally enthralled by perfumery, Gupta has come full-circle and has taken on the role of creator in starting his first fragrance house, OdeParis. Celebrating the art of perfumery and the possibilities a great fragrance can bring, OdeParis aims to create sensorial experiences guided by Love.
The debut launch of the house in Fall 2019 is Love Potion, a collection of four captivating scents with a distinct and vital personality that touches the soul and seduces the spirit. Engineered to attract and radiate love, each of the fragrances are focused on a primary, intoxicating ingredient. Love Potion’s philosophy is that we can achieve our goals with the confidence of wearing a treasured scent, and with Love as an inspiration, perfume is the magical elixir that lets us navigate our personal journey and create our own destiny every day.
